Today Scott and I took Damien to a photo studio to have his 4-year photos taken. We went to the same place as last year since I had such a good experience, but this year we didn’t like the photographer and Damien wasn’t listening to any of the instructions and just being difficult. I was pretty upset at the time thinking I wasn’t going to get any good pics, but it all worked out in the end 🙂
Later in the day, we went over to Huntington Park to play at the park and visit their beach. Damien LOVES the beach. I swear he could spend all day, everyday there. Good times 🙂
Scott finally arrived late Friday night after two delayed flights and a 22 hour layover. We decided to celebrate Damien’s birthday together on Sunday so that he could have a little bit of time during the Labor Day weekend to play with this new toys, even though today is his actual birthday. My baby is 4 years old!
Damien has spent a lot of time playing with his new toys! Not pictured was a paintset which we haven’t opened yet, children’s scissors for a future art project and a squishy tomato which is already in the garbage. It’s not much, but we’re also going to Disney on Ice at the end of the month. Thank you Grandma and Grandpa Hanks! Damien LOVES his new toys!
I was watching Napoleon Dynamite on the TV yesterday while Damien was playing with his train set. During the scene where Napoleon is performing for his school, Damien gets up and starts dancing! He cracks me up sometimes. Oh, and this is currently his favorite shirt. It’s the tye-dye shirt he made in daycare a while back.
And while yesterday was a good day, today was not. Damien seems to be having a lot of meltdowns lately (within the last month or so). It doesn’t take much for him to either be screaming or in tears. I wish I knew what he was thinking or feeling.
Since Damien and I arrived home on 4 July, we have a nice weekend to get things back in order before the work week starts again. Unfortunately, Virginia is not only hot and humid, but the bugs right now are HORRIBLE! I can’t stand to be at the park for longer than 15 min before we’re heading back to the house.
Oh and while in ND, my Mom bought Damien a sweet Spiderman punching bag which he LOVES!!! 😀
The last two weeks have gone by so quickly! It was a great, relaxing visit. I miss everyone…
Damien spent a lot of time with Grandpa Hanks this trip and had a lot of fun together 🙂
Uncle David works the nightshift at his job, but did come over a lot of evenings to hang out with us.
Since Damien and I were leaving on the 4th of July, we decided to set off some fireworks a little early. This was Damien’s first experience with them and he was a little bit nervous at the ones that were loud.
As I said, it went by so quickly. I did attend my 10 year high school reunion dinner and it was so great to see people! The attendance wasn’t the best so there were quite a few people I didn’t get to see at all. I’m actually kicking myself for not taking ANY pictures. What’s with that? And speaking of pictures, I also didn’t get a family photo this trip either! I must be slipping…
The trip back home to Virginia went great. The ONLY issue was that Damien’s carseat didn’t come in with our flight so the airline lent us a carseat so that we could drive home. The carseat was then delivered to my home later that evening so it wasn’t too much of a hassle.
On Saturday Damien and I picked up Katrina from the Yorktown Pet Lodge where she was staying while we were out of town. The lady there said that Katrina was super friendly and there weren’t any problems. I was a little bit nervous that once we got her home that maybe she would be standoff-ish, but she was completely fine.
Okay for the exciting news first–Scott got an assignment to Langley and it looks like he’ll be here in August!!! He already posted it to Facebook so people probably already know. This has just made my night. So happy 😀 Of course I can’t mention it to Damien. I made the mistake of saying something about visiting Grandma and Grandpa and he’s been hasseling me to go to the airport and droning on about how much he misses them (and Uncle David too!). I just keep thinking “I know! I want to go right now too!”
Alright, so we just had a four-day weekend for Memorial Day and I discovered a new park (Huntington Park) that’s only a 20 min drive away from my house, is free and has a beach. YESSSS! Now the only downside is all the people. The park was pretty spectacular. It was pirate themed.
Scott spent his Memorial Day weekend in Venice with four other friends/coworkers. Sounds like he had fun sightseeing.
Today was a great birthday and I felt really special. My parents, Grandma, and Scott (flowers and bear below) sent me very nice gifts from far away. Then when I went to work this morning, my office decorated my desk and made me Butterfinger cupcakes (since it’s my favorite candy bar). A couple of them even pitched in to get me a really nice gift which included $100 gift card to a spa and they even said they’d watch Damien for me! 😀 My whole office went to lunch together, but it wasn’t just for my birthday. It was also to celebrate a promotion and a farewell to one of the Airmen who’s moving to a different shop next week. Anyways, I had to share. Oh, and my phone is blowing up with Happy Birthdays. Thank you, everyone! Now I’m glad to have a four day weekend to lay low 🙂
As Damien was eating his cupcake, he started singing Happy Birthday to me and I thought it was so super cute so I asked him to sing it for me again so I could record it and this was the result:
I just can’t believe how quickly the last two weeks have gone by! Scott was pretty tired for the first week trying to adjust to the time difference and Damien was acting up a lot in the first few days. Scott is at the airport now on his way back to Germany. We did get some grown-up chores done like filing our taxes and taking the car in for preventative maintenance, but overall it was just a very nice, relaxing trip 🙂
Of course we bought Damien some new toys for this summer…
And we had fun playing in the park near the house…
We celebrated our 9-year wedding anniversary on the 10th so we could visit Virginia Beach when the weather was nice. If we would have waited until the 15th then it would have been thunderstorming for most of the day.
And that’s about all the highlights. I miss Scott already… Now I need to go get some groceries and start eating better because this vacation has caused me to pack on a few pounds! Totally worth it 🙂
It was such yucky weather this week, but today it was over 60 degrees so I took Damien over to the Virginia Living Museum. Admission was pretty pricey and the animals weren’t that impressive so it’s not something I’d want to do again anytime soon–but it was close to where we live and we just needed to get out of the house for a while.
The potty training has been going a little bit better. He’s finally started to tell me he needs to use the potty at home which is great. My issues now are that he absolutely refuses to poop in the toilet and he’s afraid of public restrooms. Still, there is progress and we’re working on it.
The other day Damien was very close to singing the ABC song by himself. I wish I would have got it on video. He doesn’t say the letters for the LMNO part and I think for V he says B instead. Still, I’m very impressed.
At the beginning of the month I took Damien to the Bounce House for a little fun and exercise. He was really scared at first and wouldn’t touch anything, but he eventually warmed up and had a good time. The place had quite a few of the inflatable play areas so it’s a nice option on really cold days.
So I’ll now explain the title of the post. Over the last couple months, Damien has been really acting up at daycare. I even had to go pick him up because he injured another kid. Everyday when I go to pick him up, it’s not a matter of whether he hit or pushed the other children, but rather how bad it was. I’m sure he’d act the same at home but I don’t have any other kids for him to beat up on. Not that he’s even doing it out of anger, but more like an impulse. He also has a difficult time listening, especially the first time a direction is given to him. I discussed him with the program director of the daycare and her observation is that his behavior is not typical of someone his age. It may be thought that he’s acting like a boy. Well just as an example, his room has 10 boys (aside from Damien), and only 5 girls. The other boys don’t act like Damien. It’s also known that Damien is incredibly active and the teachers have to watch him closer than the other kids. Anyways, I made a doctor’s appointment for Damien that will hopefully answer some questions. One thing that was mentioned to me was the possibility that milk and/or wheat products could be causing these behavioral issues. Wouldn’t that be something? I’m at least going to experiment with it and see if it yields any results. Fun stuff.
And lastly, Scott was a very sweet husband and sent me some beautiful flowers and chocolate-dipped strawberries for Valentine’s Day this year. Makes me feel happy 🙂 Oh, and thank you to Great Grandma Smith for Damien’s Valentine’s Day card. Damien really liked it and likes to talk to me about the dinosaur on the card lol.
